Early Signs and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Posted on 2/20/2023 by Evan
Early Signs and Symptoms of Gum DiseaseGum disease is caused by bacteria that accumulate on your gums. If left untreated, this condition can advance to periodontitis and lead to tooth loss. Therefore, it is vital to seek treatment immediately you notice signs of gum disease. Some of the early signs and symptoms of this condition include:

Swollen Gums

When you have swollen, red, or tender gums, you could be having gum disease. Gums become swollen due to inflammation caused by harmful bacteria. Your gums will also turn reddish due to the concentration of more blood. Even though this symptom isn't accompanied by pain, it can get very uncomfortable as time progresses.

Bleeding Gums

Another early symptom of gum disease is bleeding gums. You will notice bleeding gums when brushing or flossing. When you have gum disease, even brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush will result in bleeding. This is because the gum tissues are damaged and cannot sustain any pressure. Your gums can also bleed when you eat hard foods. If you experience any of these signs, you could be suffering from gum disease.

Receding Gums

Receding gums could also be an indicator of gum disease. You will notice gums pulling away from your teeth, making them look longer than usual. If you see this sign, you should come in for treatment immediately. Keep in mind that receding gums are not only bad for your oral health but also for your smile. With receded gums, too much of your teeth will be exposed. This will affect your smile significantly.

Persistent Bad Breath

It is normal to have a bad breath in the morning after waking up. However, if you notice a persistent bad breath even after brushing your teeth, you could be having gum disease. Get in touch with us for more information on the early signs of gum disease.
