 Whenever periodontal disease becomes too advanced for non-surgical procedures to heal without trouble, then we will have to take a look at surgical treatment. For more advanced stages of gum disease, you need surgical treatment to prevent the spread of gum disease and the problems it can cause your health.

Surgical treatment is designed to regrow lost and damaged bones and tissues. It also attempts to support your teeth by preventing tooth loss and getting rid of the infection and the bacteria that are causing the damage in the first place.
Starting the Surgeries
Before you go under for surgery, we will typically do a deep clean of your mouth. This will allow us to remove all tartar and bacteria both above and below the gumline. We also will do some root planing, which smooths the surfaces of the teeth and prevents build-up.
The longer you have gone without addressing the gum disease, the deeper the pockets of bacteria have gone into your jawline. For this, we will typically use flap surgery.
Flap Surgery
This surgery focuses on cleaning the deep pockets by lifting the gums off the teeth and removing those pockets. The roots of the teeth are cleaned and any bone damage is repaired. Bones are repaired either by smoothing them or by grafting healthy bones to the damaged sections.
Once the area is cleaned up, then we will stick the gums back into place and make sure they fit around your teeth. Typically, the gums will be sewn onto your teeth again, and then covered with gauze to stop bleeding.
You might feel some discomfort afterward, but your mouth will be fixed. After the procedure, you just need to take it easy, relax, and heal.
Guided Tissue Regeneration
This procedure helps when you have lost teeth due to gum disease. When you lose teeth, your jawbone starts to melt away, and guided tissue regeneration can help encourage it to grow back. We do this by cleaning your gum pockets and then placing a membrane between the damaged bone and your gums.
Bone grafts or other stimulating proteins are placed around the area, and after a while, the bone starts to grow back to its normal state. It is supported by the membrane and turned into a natural shape. Once the process is done, the membrane absorbs back into the body.
Surgical procedures require a bit more preparation and aftercare to fix your more severe gum disease. But with all that work comes the reward of having a fully clean mouth that is free from gum disease!
