Tooth Extraction
Wilmington, DE

Woman holding cheek due to tooth ache at Delaware Periodontics in Wilmington, DENeeding to have a tooth pulled is often the thing people most dread hearing when they go to the dentist. Even though your adult teeth are supposed to last a lifetime, there comes a time when teeth need to be removed to save the entire mouth. Delaware Periodontics can help with pulling teeth in a quick and often painless way.

Why Do Teeth Need to Be Pulled?

There are several reasons why a tooth might need to be pulled. The first reason is that your tooth is too severely damaged to be repaired. This can be because of extreme decay, poor oral hygiene, or outside damage that chips or breaks the tooth.

Another reason can include a crowded mouth. Sometimes people have large teeth in small mouths, and that can cause alignment issues and discomfort. If you are undergoing orthodontia to help realign your teeth, then some teeth might need to be pulled before the procedure can begin.

Infections of the teeth or the risk of infections can also make it so teeth need to be pulled. If the damage in your teeth enters the pulp, so can bacteria and infections, making it to the bloodstream. While antibiotics and root canal therapy can often cure damaged pulp, sometimes a damaged tooth needs to be pulled.

What to Expect

Whether you are awake or not, local anesthetic will be used so that you do not feel any discomfort. Our doctors will discuss sedation options that are right for you before the procedure.

Occasionally bone grafting procedures will be completed at the time of extraction. This will be discussed with you prior to the procedure so that you know what to expect.

After a Tooth Extraction

Detailed instructions will be given to take care of the surgical site and what to do to avoid complications. Pressure or stitches will be used to control any bleeding. No rinsing or spitting for 24 hours is a must to prevent loss of the clot.

Eventually, the pain will go away, and you’ll be back to your everyday life. Once the tooth site has healed, new bones and gums will grow in the gap. While having a gap in your teeth might be hard to get used to, in the beginning, it can throw off how you eat and affect your mouth. We’ll recommend that you fill in the gap with an implant or a fixed bridge so that other issues do not occur in the future due to the missing tooth.
